March, Sonae was in Brussels for the "Future of chemicals policy” workshop
organized by EuroCommerce. This event gathered representatives of the European
Commission, the European Chemicals Agency, retailers and wholesalers to discuss
the challenges of ensuring legal compliance with the EU chemicals legislation.
Rocha, Head of International Quality Control Department, shared the experience
of Sonae as an international retailer sourcing and selling a wide range of
products across most European countries. Working towards more safety for the
consumers and the environment is a major concern for Sonae and, since the
adoption of the first EU chemicals legislation (ten years ago), the company
proactively built business solutions to ensure that products are properly
assessed, packaged and labelled before they are available in stores. Sonae is
constantly optimizing its communication with suppliers to share knowledge about
composition and uses of products but is also engaging with consumers to answer
to information requests.
workshop was a very useful opportunity to share best practices with other
retail companies and to discuss about the best way forward for chemicals
regulations with representatives of the EU institutions.
